ABOUT US

How we got started

How we got started

How we got started

Disability in Publishing was founded by US-based disabled individuals who work in traditional publishing. Inspired by other organizations such as People of Color in Publishing and Latinx in Publishing, which have made great strides to make publishing more inclusive, we set out to find an organization that would focus on disability/health inclusivity in 2021. The decision to create Disability in Publishing was driven by the fact that we are trying to navigate an industry built on traditions that were not developed with us in mind and the belief that universal design and inclusivity benefits everyone.

Our Logo

How we got started

How we got started

Our logo is inspired by the ancient god Hephaestus/Vulcan, who is considered the patron saint of the disabled. He is also the god of metallurgy and volcanoes, which is why we melded the image of a book and volcano to create a logo that represents our mission.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create community, provide resources, and increase accessibility across the industry in order to increase disability visibility and retain the talent of disabled publishing professionals. We will support each other through advocacy, education, networking, and community. We are committed to working from an intersectional perspective.

Membership

who is this organization for?

Open to individuals with disabilities who work or aim to work in the U.S. publishing industry, including but not limited to employees of publishers and literary agencies; distributors; journalists who cover publishing; employees of literary magazines; book influencers; book scouts; independent editors, agents, publicists, and freelancers.

Our definition of disability is broad and inclusive of invisible and chronic illnesses and neurodivergence (among others). We're not here to gatekeep anyone's identity. If you consider yourself disabled, we welcome you.

A note about writers: We invite all writers to network and collaborate with us; however, we are a group that is currently focused on publishing employees and job seekers.

accessibility statement

why accessibility is important to us

Disability in Publishing is committed to providing experiences that are accessible by anyone. This includes, but is not limited to, our communications, publications, events, and website.

Conformance Status

We designed this website with World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards or better in mind. We include accessibility best practices as part of our design process and have involved people with disabilities in its design and testing to improve accessibility. Particular focus was put into simple layout, heading-based navigation, and high contrast. We have tested accessibility using keyboard, screen reader, and browser accessibility extensions.

Please note this website has not been independently assessed by a third party.
